FAQs
- Q: So what happened to the first version of the story?
- A: Simply put, I became fatigued by it. There were also the connotations that people drew from it having an all-anthro cast, which were unintentional on my part and, I felt, distracted from the characters. I had actually been arguing with myself over whether to restart it for a long time, and while I internally battled it out, I was getting nowhere on the story. It's gone much better since I finally made my decision!
- Q: Will you tell us how the original story was going to end?
- A: Maybe someday, but in case I decide to re-use some characters or plot points I don't want to reveal anything just now.
- Q: How does the process of creating a comic page differ from the first iteration of Native to the new one?
- A: Aside from the lettering, the original Native was done entirely by hand. I wrote, planned thumbnails, penciled, inked and then used prismacolor markers to create each page. Then I scanned, cropped, adjusted and lettered pages. Rarely (I think maybe less than 10 times in 91 pages) I did some editing to change something I didn't like. Each page would take me approximately 20 hours to create! Now, I write, thumbnail and pencil the pages. Then I scan them and color them digitally with an Wacom® Intuos2 tablet in Adobe® Photoshop. Lettering is done as it was originally, digitally. Pages now take me about 8 hours each to create. What a relief!
If you are interested to see how I create a page, I documented the process here. Later on I began to add textures and will update all early pages to match as soon as I can.
